DARLINGHURST HOUSE

Sydney Australia

Alterations and additions to a single storey terrace with attic conversion, rear lane access and garage

DESIGN

The existing house is a typical single storey Victorian worker’s cottage, with the major rooms addressing the street and the ancillary functions relegated to the back. The concept is to reorient the house to the rear of the site, taking advantage of the fall towards the rear lane and the district views. A long corridor gives access to the bedrooms at the front of the house and up into the converted attic and terminates into an open plan kitchen / dining and living area, which extend out onto a roof terrace above the rear lane and the new garage. With the floor level following the site drop, the kitchen, dining and living area feature extra high ceilings and large glazing towards the roof deck and the site courtyard.
